transcriptions of dreams – c.i.t.i.o.n. – self release
‘Transcriptions of Dreams’ by c.i.t.i.o.n. is a wonderful new work that combines the worlds of solo performance and ambient music. Performed by composer Josh Carro on vibraphone these short vignettes take the listener to Josh’s inner world of dreams.
I remember many nights at Josh’s home in Tempe Trizona listening to him make his first experiments with ambient music. At the time he had set up his own mini recording studio and was processing zithers and various percussion instruments and mixing and processing them in ableton live. Tho these were beautiful works, his current EP is certainly his most mature work to date. Short and sweet, it takes me quickly into a sonic universe that is at once appealing and compelling.
What I like most about these works is that they were performed live by Josh using real instruments. These are tightly constructed sound worlds that were meticulously crafted by a person who has taken real effort to learn about sonic architecture. Having once briefly working as Josh’s composition teacher, this album is especially special for me because I see it as a culmination of many years of work by c.i.t.i.o.n.
Let ‘Transcriptions of Dreams’ take you on a trip through Josh’s sonic universe. Pay careful attention to the eloquent use of micro-counterpoint and harmonic manipulation. This album is sure to be the first of many great works by this aspiring artist. I look forward to hearing more from this talented composer and hope that his work finds a nice home on a label.
