an inspiring afternoon with kindred spirit carl stone
“I think that I shall never see
a poem as short as “http”" – carl stone (talking about twitter poetry)
yesterday i had the good fortune to meet a composer who’s work i have admired for a very long time, carl stone. i met carl through facebook some months ago and then became friendly with him after finding out that he would be playing a show here in new orleans at the contemporary arts center. all through the process of getting to know carl he has been an incredible guy and a major source of inspiration. he was even kind enough to allow me to interview him and ask the questions about his work that i had been dieing to ask. after meeting him in person, i felt like i had maybe met someone that reminded me of who i might become and where i might be headed. interestingly enough, after each taking a facebook quiz that links you with a classical composer, we both ended up as brahms. “Both mysterious and brooding, you have a reputation for being moody and reclusive. You are a traditionalist, but an innovative one. You captivate all with your inspired genius.” certainly carl has captivated me with his own inspired genius, which in my opinion is not only a genius for music but a genius for living.
i have to admit that the stress of a 40+hr day job and the intensity of the work for the sleep concert had gotten me into a stressed out place. meeting carl yesterday, strolling through the french quarter in beautiful weather, and just talking about what it means to be a creator really shifted my vibration in the right direction. its funny how the universe does that, and how these kinds of synchronicities can really make such an impact on where you go, what you do and who you become. as i write this, i put it out there to the universe that i am thankful for this interaction, and that i will to continue meeting men like carl and the other amazing people i have met through this blog, the internet and through music.
in the next weeks, i will be busy recomposing nearly 200 tracks of audio into one giant sleep symphony. during that time, i hope to open my ideas to you and to make broadcasting my creative process and act of creation itself. in this current time when digital files are so easy to acquire, perhaps it is the creative process itself that shall become the most valuable aspect of art.
just like when i read my favorite words by morton feldman, meeting carl reminded me that the most poignant right that we have is being ourselves fully and without regard for ‘failure’. and that, if you just don’t let up, your life will blossom as it is meant to blossom.
so if you are in new orleans, come and see carl stone on friday march 20th at 8:00 pm at the center for contemporary arts. click on the hyperlink for more info.
