Tanner Menard was born on September 20th, 1978 – the same month that Brian Eno published his essay titled “Ambient Music”. At the age of 11, Menard composed his first works for piano and has since explored minimal sound worlds in myriad contexts that are bound by a central poetic understanding of sound. In recent years his works have explored the relationship between sound and meditation and have been largely focused around his work with physical modeling of long pianos with novel tunings created by Nicholas Gish. His early exposure to ambient electronica came in 2002 when he worked as an assistant to Naut Humon at Recombinant Media Labs. In 2005 Menard served as an artist in residence at Arizona State University where he collaborated with Jeph Jerman, and Gary Hill for his installation, “Envyronie”.
Menard is rapidly becoming known for his remix of Robert Rich’s Sleep Concert concept with Chika Iijima and Jeremy Bible and has lulled audiences around the US to sleep with sleep sounds from over 100 artists from all over the globe. Contributing artists include Mathieu Rhulmann, Ian Hawgood, Adam Pacione, Nicholas Szczepanik, Johnny Utterback, Richard Lainhart, James Andrew, Jimmy Behan, i8u, Ben Owen, Stephen Spera, Manrico Montero Calzadiaz, Fabio Anile, Elian and many others. Performances include showings at Fusebox Festival in Austin, Texas, Ingenuity Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, Antenna Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana and Liberty Advance Spiritual Center in Boulevard, California.
Menard’s music is released on Install Records, Archaic Horizon, HLM, Slow Flow Rec and Kafua. Future releases in 2010 will be on Tokyo Droning, Full Spectrum, Schedios, Ahora Eterno, Duckbay, Mandorla and Experimedia. His music for orchestra is published on Loose Filter Music. He has shared concerts with masters such as John Corigliano, Michael Dougherty, William Bolcom, Jasper TX, Jeremy Bible, Will Thomas Long, Mark Bingham and Daniel Bernard Romain. Menard’s work has also appeared on the radio, on tv, in plays, at art galleries, festivals, spiritual centers and in major concert halls across the world.
